To check illegal sand mining and conservewater bodies the Karnataka government has decided to import sandfrom countries like Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand, official sourcestoday said.

The government had been planning in this regard for some time andthe Mines and Geology Department had decided to allow six companiesto import sand from abroad and sell them in Karnataka after packingthem in bags.

The imported sand would come at much lower rate than locallymined sand and will be of best quality. This will also help theState conserve nature and safeguard water bodies, especially riverbeds. The move would also help put an end to excessive mining of thesand, an official said.
