Almost 75 days after taking over mining and distribution of river sand, the state government has appointed a civil servant to oversee the sand quarrying operations. Kancheepuram sub-collector Arun Thamburaj A has been appointed in the newly created post of project director for sand quarrying operations.
According to a government order, sanction has been accorded to create a temporary post of project director, sand quarrying operations with headquarters at Tiruchirappalli for a period of one year. The development comes in the wake of the Public Works Department (PWD) launching the online facility for mining from sand quarries.
However, representatives in the construction sector are raising alarm over sand shortage hitting the construction activities to the core in the state. Developers claim that hardly 4000 loads of sand are being distributed from the quarries, while the daily requirement for the construction industry was 40,000 loads across Tamil Nadu. Of this, the demand for Chennai and its suburbs alone accounts for 7500 loads.
About 30 sand quarries are functioning across the state with a chunk of the quarries situated in central parts of the state.
