Gujarat to revise its export promotion strategy

GANDHINAGAR | June 15, 2017: The state government plans to implement a new export promotion strategy and policy to boost export-oriented industrial activity in Gujarat. The state industry and mines department recently made a submission to the ministry of commerce, presenting a broad plan to raise exports from the state.

Gujarat currently exports agricultural produce (cumin seeds, sesame seeds, castor seeds, groundnut, mango, cotton) , minerals and metals (bauxite, brass), diamonds, gems and jewellery (hand-made gold and silver ornaments, coloured gemstones), chemicals and petrochemicals products (agro chemicals, specialty chemicals, pesticides, pigments, dyes and dyestuffs), plastics (packaging products, medical disposables, tarapaulins), textiles (medical textiles, readymade garments, denims), pharmaceuticals (bulk drugs), cement and marine products (processed seafood, tilapia, basa, crab) mainly to USA, Europe, UAE, Australia, Japan, China, Canada, Brazil, Thailand, Germany and a few other countries.

Exports to other parts of the world are very low. The current volume of exports is also very low. The government's new strategy aims to increase this.

State industries commissioner, Mamta Verma, said, "We have informed the ministry of commerce that we will focus on a holistic strategy driven by the four pillars of exports, which are increasing value addition of exports, discovering new markets for existing products, adding new products to Gujarat's export basket and reducing regulatory and policy barriers to exports."

"The export focused areas under the new strategy will be Africa, Russia, Iran and Latin America," she added.

The Gujarat government's proposed new value-addition strategy includes castor oil derivatives and groundnut based snacks. The state also want to focus on defence products, technical textiles, electronics and IT services.

The state told the ministry of commerce that it will actively engage in trade and export facilitation and form a new export promotion policy and an export grievance redressal forum.
