GSPCB renews consent to mines at Velgem, Sanguem

PANJIM | May 22, 2017: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday renewed the consent to operate of V M Salgaocar mines at Velgem and Timblo Pvt Ltd mine at Sanguem while the fate of 12 mining leases at Sonshi will be decided on Tuesday.

The renewal comes after the operators of the two mines deposited bank guarantees last week. A total of 20 mines were asked for bank guarantees but only two complied with the directions.

The activities of 12 of 13 mines at Sonshi were suspended on April 28 due to significant air pollution in the vicinity of the village.

The High Court of Bombay at Goa had directed that there should be no mining-related traffic on Sonshi’s roads till the notices issued by the GSPCB are decided upon.
