UN chooses Naya Raipur to set up Tech Innovation Lab

The United Nations (UN) has decided to set up a Technology Innovation Laboratory in Naya Raipur.

 

A meeting, presided over by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh was held at his official residence here on Saturday.

 

During the meeting, a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) among State Government's Electronics and Information Technology Department, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Naya Raipur and the Telecommunications and IT division of the United Nations, officials said.

 

Notably, on June 23 last year, Union Minister of State for Power and Coal (Independent charge) Piyush Goyal on his visit to Naya Raipur had announced to set up an Innovation Lab on the newly built IIIT campus within the next two years.

 

The move would help students get an opportunity to take up research and innovation projects of their interest, he said. Goyal was speaking after inaugurating the IIIT campus building at Naya Raipur adding, it (IIIT) will become a catalyst of growth in IT and Telecom sector.

 

"The institute will become a catalyst of growth in Information Technology and Telecom sector in the coming days. Not only in Chhattisgarh, but students from this institute will serve in the entire country," he had stated.

 

Spread over 50 acres of land, the state-of-art campus is jointly built by Chhattisgarh government and NTPC Ltd at a cost of Rs 200 crore in Naya Raipur.

 

"With the collaboration of NTPC, the State government would establish an Innovation Lab in the IIIT premises where renowned scientists from eminent institutes across the world will be called to guide the students to take up research and technology projects," he had stated.

 

The lab will provide an opportunity to students to showcase their talent in area of research and innovation and will also help greatly in discovering and introducing new technology in coal , mining, power generation though thermal, solar and wind energy, Goyal said.

 

Appreciating the IIIT building, Goyal had stated, "It resembles the structure of Belur Math founded by Swami Vivekanand.I hope the students will take it as an inspiration and excel in their future."

 

In his address Chief Minister Raman Singh had stated that the State Government will take every possible initiative to make this institute- one of the best institutes of the country, he said.

 

Higher Education and Technical Education Minister Prem Prakash Pandey had announced in his address that in this IIIT, 50 per cent seats will be reserved for youth of Chhattisgarh, 15 per cent for NTPC and 35 per for students from across the country and abroad.

 

Notably, the Naya Raipur Development Authority (NRDA) is going for further development of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) campus with proposed construction of some more new buildings, officials informed.

 

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government last year had also taken up the task of converting the IIIT premises here into a ‘Green Campus’.

 

The task involves planting a huge number of trees in the campus of the height of 6 to 7 feet besides development of a sprawling lawn in the campus. A large number of avenue plants are being planted in the campus.

 

Notably, the intake for admissions to B.Tech (ECE) and B.Tech (CSE) had been increased in the last academic session by 20 seats each at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).

 

Previously the seat strength was 40 each for courses which had now been increased to 60 each.
