Govt unlikely to impose MIP on aluminium

NEW DELHI | March 3, 2017:

Despite the Ministry of Mines insisting on the imposition of minimum import price (MIP) on aluminium products, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is unlikely to do so.

The ministry apprehends that any such decision would fuel inflation and burden the common man.

“Indeed, the government is keen on protecting domestic interests from cheap imports, but not at the expense of common man. We have to consider common man’s interest before taking any decision,” said an official in the ministry.

To press their case, a team of senior officials from the Ministry of Mines met their counterparts in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently to convince them about the need for imposition of minimum import price.
