Illegal mining has claimed three lives at Alkadih in Jharia on Sunday. The incident occurred when a closed mine belonging to BCCL at Mahalaxmi Pariyojona in Jharia caved in. According to eyewitness, three persons died while two got multiple injuries when the roof caved in and many were trapped. Scared over police action, others who were present outside the mine pulled out two bodies and fled away from the spot.
Later, police with the rescue team rushed to the spot and recovered a body, which is yet to be recognised, police said.
Illegal coal mining is rampant in Jharkhand, with around 7,20,000 tonnes of coal being smuggled every year, causing revenue loss. Despite the tall claims of district administration, illegal mining continues. Within the last few months, illegal mining claimed several lives in the coal belt area of Jharkhand and its outskirts while more than 650 people lost their lives during mining in the State over the years.
