Crane Tragedy: Toll mounts to 4, probe begins

UDAIPUR | Feb 02, 2017: The toll mounted to four in the crane collapse tragedy that took place in Sindusar Khurd mine premises in Railmagra tehsil in Rajsamand on Tuesday. One of the workers, S Chandravanshi from Jharkhand, who was admitted in a serious condition, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. Three workers had died on the spot who were identified as Lingam Satyaro (Andhra Pradesh), Harjeet Singh (Amritsar), Kameshwar (Odhisha). Six others who were admitted in various hospitals were discharged.

The incident had taken place at an ongoing construction site of a plant at the Sindusar Khurd mine which belongs to Hindustan Zinc.

However, the building work was being carried out by LNT company who is responsible for the mishap, sources claimed.

The machine which collapsed due to some unknown reasons too belonged to the company. One of the belt of the equipment snapped and the crane fell on the ground where many labourers had been working.

The Directorate of Mines and Geology has initiated an inquiry in the case. Two deputy directors of the department Irfan Ahmed Ansari and S Bera visited the spot on Wednesday and recorded statements. Meanwhile, another inquiry at the local level has been initiated by Tehsildar Kaluram Regar.

Lal Singh Shaktawat, SHO of Railmagra police station too went to the accident spot to make report for the police case. Meanwhile, the company has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh each for the deceased's family. The mining department may initiate an action after getting a detailed report on the cause of the mishap, sources said.

The disaster management experts are trying to find the reasons for the crane collapse. Overweight is not probably the reason for the crane collapse as the equipment was carrying a 24-ton block against its lifting capacity of 35 tonnes, experts suggested.

The autopsies of three bodies was conducted on Tuesday night which has also raised questions. Generally, autopsy is conducted only during the day time and the process is not followed after sunset, however, in this case, the bodies which were kept at the Railmagra Hospital were given to their family members soon after the post-mortem.
