Stating that excessive sand mining in River Cauvery in Mohanur is affecting the ground water level in over 40 villages in the area, villagers demanded the closure of the sand second sale stockyard in Kumaripalayam and staged protest here on Saturday.

The stockyard, run by an individual, is functioning in the area for the last three years. Sand mined from the river is stored here and sold to Salem, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts.

Over 1,000 lorries transport the sand to various locations everyday. On Saturday, villagers gathered in large numbers and demanded that the stockyard be closed. They said that sand is mined beyond the permissible limits leading to depletion of water resources in the area. They said that non-availability of water for drinking and agriculture is affecting them. Hence, they urged the Public Works Department officials to close the stockyard. It is said that protesters damaged the roof of the building.

Revenue officials held talks with the protesters and promised to initiate action. Based on their assurance, protesters withdrew their protest. Police personnel continue to remain in the area to prevent untoward incidents.
