50 mining-affected villages on development road

Ajmer | Nov 05, 2016: The local administration completed the proposal for development programmes in about 50 villages in the district, identified as mining-affected areas, on Thursday.

There's a serious shortage of health and educational facilities, good roads and drinking water in these villages. The programme is being implemented by the Mineral Foundation Trust and 10% of the royalty on minerals will be invested in these villages.

All the mining-affected villages will be painted in a common colour to identify them as well as to ensure that the benefits of the programme reach these localities.

The managing committee of the foundation, which held a meeting on Thursday, found that these villages continue to suffer on the health and educational fronts.

"Children in these villages do receive good education as parents labour in the mines," said a source.

Ajmer is one of the leading mining regions in the state for quartz, phosphorus, lead, building stones and similar minerals.

"The mining activity pollutes not only the atmosphere but also the ecology of the surrounding area in these villages," the source said.

Villagers also face health issues mostly due to shortage of drinking water.

Taking all these problems into account, the district administration has prepared a proposal to improve the lives of villagers.

"We have prepared a proposal to provide better health facilities, pollution control system and school education for children. This will be presented before the council of the foundation," said Ajmer district collector Gaurav Goyal.
