Sylhet | Nov 03, 2014: Coal import from Indian state of Meghalaya resumed on Tuesday through two border Land Customs (LC) stations in Sylhet after a break of 15 months.

About 220 metric tons of coal entered the country through Sutarkandi LC Station and another 36 tons of coal entered through Tamabil LC station on Tuesday afternoon, LC officials and business people said.

By this time another 36 tons of coal reached Tamabil LC station, said Coal Importers Group President Falah Uddin Ali Ahmed.

According to sources, resumption of coal import gave a sigh of relief among the importers and traders, as well as the labourers, engaged in loading unloading of goods at the border LCs.

The import remained suspended for a long as the miners and authorities stopped coal extraction in line with a court order, border sources informed, following filing sue by some environment groups against coal mining in Meghalaya.

The import resumed after the court cleared the restrictions recently. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi importers had to visit Meghalaya for sitting with the Indian exporters to settle the increased prices for the item. At last representatives from the Coal Importers Group, Sylhet agreed to buy coal at US US$ 65 per ton, officials informed.
