Meghalaya state fighting coal ban

Date | Jun 27, 2016:

Cabinet on Friday backed the Mining and Geology department in its call to lobby the ‘Centre’ for a restart to coal mining operations.

The National Green Tribunal had banned rat-hole coal mining in the state following demonstrations in 2014 over concerns of polluted waterways, according to The Shillong Times.

The discussion appears to centre on a 1973 piece of legislation that gives ultimate control of coal mining activities to the central government, rather than the state.

The state’s lobby will centre on a promise to bring in regulations to cover the environment, safety and labour, according to The Hindu, another news service.
