Mining firms asked to clear silt from Bicholim

 

SAKHALI(Goa) | Jun 10, 2016: In the wake of large amount of mining silt dumped in mining company premises entering some houses and shops at Pazwada, Sundar Peth and other areas of Bicholim town on Monday, Bicholim deputy collector Mahadev Arondekar has asked the mining company officials to clear the gutters of the silt. He also informed that a special disaster management cell has been formed to address monsoon-related calls.

 

Arondekar had convened a meeting of all the concerned officials regarding disaster management in Bicholim on Thursday. Bicholim mamlatdar Gurudas Desai, fire force personnel, police personnel, BMC and forest officials were also present. The deputy collector has decided to inspect all the mining sites in Bicholim area at around 10.30 a.m on Friday.

 

Meanwhile, BMC chairperson Rajaram Gaonkar had also convened a special meeting in his cabin which was attended by BMC chief officer Bhanudas Naik, deputy chairperson Ajit Birje and other councillors.

 

During the meeting, a special discussion on entering of mining silt into Bicholim area was held. Gaonkar blamed the mining companies for the same and demanded that they compensate the affected villagers as early as possible.

 

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall that lashed during the last two days paralysed normal life in Bicholim. Low-lying areas in Bicholim market were water-logged. Many trees got uprooted leading to road blockage at some places. Fire personnel were kept on their toes to clear the trees.
