NGT stays sand mining permit

Mangaluru | May 23, 2016: The Southern Zone of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stayed the issuance of sand mining permit and extraction of sand from rivers of Udupi district, located in CRZ (coastal regulation zone) area. This follows an appeal by Uday Suvarna and others of Udupi taluk.

A press release by Ranjan Shetty, counsel for the applicants at NGT, said that the tribunal issued an order on May 17 in this regard. NGT’s order of injunction restrains the respondents and their subordinates from taking any steps towards issuance of sand mining permits in any manner to extract sand in the rivers in Udupi district that are located in CRZ area until further orders from the Tribunal.
