BHUBANESWAR | May 11, 2016: A two-day ‘Sustainable Mining Summit’, organised by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI), began here on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the summit, FIMI president H Noor Ahmed said, “Big mines are working with sustainability. We should focus on the middle-level mines.” He observed that there should be trust between community and industry, which is lacking. For this reason, the industries are facing lots of problems, he said. The summit is a platform to bring all the stakeholders to discuss the issue, Ahmed added.
Tata Steel MD TV Narendran, FIMI vice-president Sanjay Pattnaik and Ministry of Employment and Forest IG Deepak Sinha were present as guests.
Sinha said all the minerals in India are beneath the forest area. He gave emphasis to plant more tress to stop environmental degradation.
In the technical session, topics on Regulatory Issues in Mining, Mining Taxation: International and Indian Experiences, Implementation of the Sustainable Development Framework in Indian Mines and Sustainable Mining Practices by Rio Tinto in India and Globally were discussed.
PC Sahu of the Mesco, Lekha Chakraborty from the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and Debanjan Bandyopadhyay were present as speakers, among others. The summit is covering four key themes dealing with sustainable mining practices and closure, regulatory issues on mining, environment and forests and CSR activities. Emerging markets play a significant role in global mining and metal sectors due to the increasing demand of metals especially in developing countries. Global understanding is required to achieve sustainable development in the mining industry, the speakers opined.
