‘Probe’ into beach sand mining sends Trimex staff into a tizzy

SRIKAKULAM | April 6, 2016: Trimex Sands Private Limited is likely to suspend operations temporarily with the reported inquiry being conducted by the AP Mines Department.

The company, which began beach sand mining activity in 2010, has been in deep crisis for the last six months due to legal tangles.

Recently, the Public Accounts Committee of AP Legislative Assembly inspected the project site at Vatsavalasa of Gara mandal and enquired about the mining activity in the disputed area. The company maintained that it got the permission for the mining activity on 387 acres.

The issue was raised in the Assembly recently and BJP floor leader Vishnu Kumar Raju urged the government to conduct a high-level inquiry into the matter.

The Mining Department, accordingly, reportedly ordered the inquiry. However, company sources said they had no information about the probe.

Meanwhile, the reported order caused tension among Trimex employees. Around 3,000 persons depend directly or indirectly on the company. The Trimex Employees Association has decided to petition Srikakulam Collector P. Lakshmi Narasimham. .

“The company has been in deep financial crisis following drop in demand for its products in China and other markets. The government’s order will be another blow and it will directly impact us. We plan to meet senior officials in this regard,” said a representative of the company.
