HARIDWAR | Jan 11, 2016: Alleging that the administration has gone back on its promise of imposing a ban on illegal mining in the Ganga riverbed in Haridwar, Matri Sadan Ashram chief Swami Shivanand on Sunday began an indefinite hunger strike.
He said that he might stop water intake as well if his demands on a complete ban on mining in the Ganga from Raiwala to Bhogpur are not accepted by the government.
Last year, the seer had gone on a fast from May 21 and ended it only in June after he was assured by chief minister Harish Rawat that his demands on the issue would be considered.
However, he is now fasting again as mining has been allowed in over a dozen lots between Bishanpur and Bhogpur, his disciples have alleged.
