'Mining Disturbing Wildlife Habitat in Telengana'

KARIMNAGAR | Dec 14, 2015: Not only humans but animals too have been hit hard by drought conditions prevailing in several mandals of Telangana. This, aided by rampant granite and stone mining in the hills, has forced several wild animals to venture into human settlements in search of food and water.

While cases of animals straying into villages from the wilderness is a common sight in these areas during summer, the seasonal phenomenon becoming a year-round problem is something which is becoming a cause of concern for the authorities.

Bears, monkeys, boars are often seen in the villages and at times even leopards can be spotted near hamlets in Sircilla and Kodimiyal.

Similarly, talks of wild boars in Karimnagar city has kept the people on tenterhooks for long now.

Meanwhile, speaking about the issue, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) west division G Narsaiah said the department has pressed forest staff into duty to patrol the area during night.

The officials, for safety reasons, have asked commuters to carry a torch or other source of light during night.

It may also be noted that there have been cases when these wild animals have attacked human beings. Last year, a bear attacked a farmer at Annaram village of Manakondur mandal. In a similar incident, a man was mauled by a bear at Ullampalli in Husnabad mandal around one-and-a-half month ago.

This migration, meanwhile, is not only a threat to human beings but to animals as well. Not long back, a bear was run over by a granite lorry at Bahupet village on Vemulawada-Karimangar highway.
