NAVI MUMBAI | Oct 27, 2015: Four men were arrested near Kharghar creek for illegal sand excavation on Monday. Acting on a tip off, the assistant commissioner of police (Panvel division), Sheshrao Suryavanshi conducted a raid near the Kharghar creek and busted an illegal sand excavation racket being carried out by miscreants. The four arrested men were later handed over to the Kharghar police.
However, till going to the press, the Kharghar cops had not registered an FIR and claimed that the police statements of the detained persons were being recorded. ACP Suryavanshi said, "We conducted the raid around 6pm near the creek beyond the railway tracks. Four men were detained from the spot for indulging in illegal sand excavation. We have seized a dumper loaded with a huge quantity of sand and a poclain machine. The seized sand is estimated to cost around Rs one lakh."
ACP Suryavanshi added, that despite the police taking legal action on the sand mafia, they go scot-free after paying the penalty. "It is time that the revenue department takes serious action to rid the menace of such illegal sand mining."
