KERI | Oct 05, 2015: As a part of the wildlife week celebration organized by the Goa forest department, volunteers of the Vivekanad environment awareness brigade, Keri presented a street play on Saturday evening at Sanskruti Bhavan's hall in Panaji. The play highlighted the increasing wildlife and environmental crisis situation.
"Street plays are a powerful medium to create environmental awareness and impart eco friendly values such as the importance of cherishing our wildlife and ecology. This street play involved nine female participants from various schools across Sattari," said play director Shubhada Chari. Though the dialogues were in Konkani, Marathi and Hindi songs were used in order to educate the audiences on various environmental issues.
Principal chief conservator of forests, Ajay Saksena, said, "The play highlighted wildlife protection, water conservation, garbage disposal and management effectively." Mangroves society of India president Arvind Untawale said, "Various pertinent environmental issues that are affecting Goa have been focused on along with viable solutions that can be adopted. The presentation was both, educative and eye-opening."
Deputy conservator of forests, wildlife division, Anil Kumar, said, "These rural youth made sincere efforts to direct the attention of the gathering on the various environmental and wildlife issues that are threatening their existence. The audience enjoyed the performance"
Among the issues highlighted in the play were how mining activities have resulted in pollution of water bodies, displacement of wild animals and intensifying man-wild animal conflict . The message stressed on was how, if we fail to protect our forest and water resources, we should be prepared to face the consequences of our actions.
