New Delhi | Jul 29, 2015: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed 39 review petitions filed by mining lessees of category C mines in Karnataka.
Several miners, including V.S. Lad and Hothur Traders among others, had moved the apex court seeking review of a verdict dated 18 April 2013 which barred category C miners from mining activity.
A three-judge bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi, R. K. Agrawal and N. V. Ramana said that after hearing all the mining companies and the amicus curiae (friend of court) Shyam Divan, the court found no compelling reason to review the verdict.
The categorisation of mines into A, B and C was recommended by a central empowered committee based on how much illegal mining was pursued by these companies.
