Sand mining opposed

SALEM (Tamil Nadu) | Jul 22, 2015: The local people caught hold of the vehicles which were attempting to lift sand from Vellalapuram tank near Konganapuram on Monday.

The District Collector has accorded permission for the lifting of clay and red sand from the tank to a private party.

When the contractor brought lorries and equipments for lifting the sand, the local people gathered in good strength and opposed the lifting of gravel sand from the middle of the pond. They said that permission is only for lifting the sand from near the bunds.

They caught hold of the vehicles and equipments.

On receiving information, revenue officials rushed to the spot and pacified the local people.

The officials promised that permission for lifting of sand will be allowed only after measuring the area allowed for the same, following which the people released the vehicles and dispersed.
