Four final-year Mechanical Engineering students at the Musaliar College Engineering and Technology here have come up with the working model of a three-side tipper vehicle.

Displaying the model, the students, Midhil Vijay, Akhil Raj, B. Akhil Raj, and Nithin R. Pillai, said the mechanism would dump load from three sides. The vehicle can be tilted at the front end and at either sides, facilitating offloading of materials from three sides, they say.

The machine uses electric motors, instead of hydraulic systems, and hence the cost of production will come down, making the model cost-effective. Discussions were held with certain truck manufacturing companies for commercial production. Efforts were under way for obtaining patent for the technology, they said. The new technology could be put to use in the construction and mining industry, they say.

The main drawback of the conventional tipper lorry is that it can unload materials only from the rear side which often makes unloading difficult on narrow, busy roads, they say. Their project was supervised by Sinu K. Jacob and G. Madhu, both professors.
