Kurharbaree Colliery on 24.7.1935

Kurharbaree Colliery (Joktiabad Section)

Date of the Accident - 24.7.1935
Number of persons killed - 62
Owner - Govt. of India (Dept. of Railways)
Place - Giridih Coalfield

This accident was due to an ignition of coal dust by the flame from a blown-out shot of liquid oxygen explosive. The mine was non-gassy and worked by naked lights. The seam was about 4 m thick and galleries were driven about 2.4 m high in the bottom part of the seam leaving 1.2 to 1.5 m of coal next to the roof. The roof coal was generally got down by explosives.

There was no trace of inflammable gas before or after the explosion. The explosion was one of coal dust. There was abundant evidence of coking on roof, props, coal in the tubs, and sides of galleries.

The dust near the origin of the explosion was first of all raised into the air by the 3 shots which immediately preceded the blown-out shot and the flame of the latter was projected into the cloud of fine dust so formed. As a result of the explosion, it was recommended that owing to the liability of liquid oxygen to be mishandled in the processes of preparation and use, it is an undesirable explosive for use underground in coal mines.
