The ENB GP’s unit in South Asia is looking to further enhance its capacity of environmental specialists in the New Delhi Office to support the ongoing work and activities of the India Air Quality Management program, with work across multiple cities and states and with different sector teams.

Air pollution presents a growing challenge to India’s development and Government of India (GoI) launched the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) in January of 2019 to address this challenge. The NCAP has set a time-bound goal for improving air quality across the country, with a focus on around 100 non-attainment cities where air pollution standards are currently not being met.

The Bank is formally engaged with the Government of India and several States on a 3- year (2019-2021) Technical Assistance (TA) Program on Air Quality Management to support implementation of the National Clean Air Program (NCAP). The program comprises of support at the federal level – to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and at the State Level- focusing on the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs), state sectoral departments and technical institutes as part of the NCAP Knowledge Network, and implementation support in the central and eastern part of the Indo Gangetic Plain.

Air quality management involves work across many different sectors and development of strong linkages with programs that can address emissions from industry, energy, transport, urban development, waste management, agriculture, and household cooking and heating. It includes many synergies with actions to combat climate change.
